Q: My home was damaged and I believe it might
be structural damage. A van hit the center structural beam dividing a 3 car garage. The
center beam appears slightly bent and shows separation from the outer board. Who can I
turn to repair the damage? Please help! |
A: Looks to me like this is a simple fix. It
would have been nice if you had sent me a photo of the inside wall and photo from the
street just to see it a little better. However, all you should have to do to fix this is,
get a sledge hammer and someone to hold a 3 or 4 foot piece of 2" x 6" flat
against the inside wall of your garage at this pushed-in location and drive the wall
towards the front street. Keep the 2" x 6" above the foundation and on the
inside wall where it is pushed in. Hit the 2" x 6" one blow at a time with the
sledge hammer and watch how it's moving to close the gap on the out side trim. Once the
trim is back tight and gap is closed you should be fixed. Then get some paint and
caulking, fill the cracks at the wood trim and repaint.
It does not appear that the interior
studs are broken. It seems like the Van softly pushed the wall in. Don't be too hard on
the driver, this type of stuff happens all the time. Had one questioner tell me his wife
pulled into the attached garage and after she stopped where she wanted to be, her foot
slipped off the brake and pushed the gas pedal, which landed her in the dining room. |
